The North Node of the Moon and Life Purpose

The astrological north node helps us find our way.

Rediscover Your Soul's Purpose

The moon’s north node in the birth chart relates to your life purpose and soul’s mission. This part of the natal chart is a priority for spiritually oriented astrologers. Astrologers with an evolutionary or intuitive approach consider the soul’s growth a central focus. These astrologers, such as myself, are also regarded as modern compared to ancient astrologers who focused more on fate than free will.

A fatalistic model is disempowering and can lead to depression. A spiritual model empowers people with optimal choices. With freedom of choice, one can manifest the chart’s potential by aligning the will with one’s highest purpose. Additionally, combining astrological insight with daily spiritual practices will help clarify what choices align with the soul’s intention.

Free Will, the North Node, and Life Purpose

Astrology gives a fresh perspective.

In addition to the moon’s north node, other important factors relate to your life’s purpose. These include the position and aspects of the Sun and Pluto and the chart as a whole. Additionally, the birth chart is not static. Since it is dynamic, you are free to manifest any potential in the chart uniquely. Twin studies have shown that identical twins born minutes apart often have very different lives because of each soul’s personal choices.

Astrology is a powerful tool that provides a wealth of information about patterns or archetypal energies that may manifest according to our freedom of choice. It not only sheds light on our societal challenges but also instills hope by suggesting optimal solutions. When issues such as poverty, famine, war, disasters, etc. affect us all, we are not alone. We have collective free will to address them, fostering a sense of optimism and unity.

From a personal and societal perspective, we can choose how best to respond to life’s challenges. The patterns of the outer planets generally depict these broader issues.

What is the North Node of the Moon?

The north node helps clarify the soul's life purpose.

Every planet has two nodes, which are abstract points in space. Any planet that crosses the ecliptic on the north and south side forms a node. The ecliptic is the sun’s apparent path around the earth, though the Earth actually revolves around the sun. See a diagram of the lunar nodes HERE.

The Moon’s nodes are significant to any astrologer who supports the soul’s highest intention. The moon’s north node reflects your life purpose, as expressed in your chart. The Moon’s south node is always directly opposite the Moon’s north node. It symbolizes your talents, strengths, and qualities developed in the past.

However, our souls have now chosen to develop qualities associated with the north node’s symbolism and integrate them with the already-earned strengths. Our growth process stagnates if we focus on what is already familiar. The path of least resistance is more comfortable, like an old pair of shoes that are getting worn out. But to grow, we need to try on a new pair that may feel uncomfortable initially and learn to thrive in them.

The Soul's Journey Back to Spirit

Astrology helps guide us back home.

Many astrologers view the chart from an evolutionary perspective that includes the concept of reincarnation. This means that the chart reflects the soul’s development thus far on its long journey back to the Divine or Creative Source. One can be open to the possibility of reincarnation without any external proof. However, it is not necessary to have this belief to benefit from a chart reading. For example, some consider their talents and gifts to come from a Higher Power. This is a valid viewpoint as well.

One can have strong religious views and still benefit from astrology. Many astrologers have written extensively about biblical references to astrology and reincarnation. This is also true of other spiritual traditions. Recent surveys have indicated that more than half of Christians believe in astrology, and many believe in reincarnation.

Spiritual astrologers recognize the importance of placing faith in the Divine rather than in astrology alone. They also recommend recognizing astrology as a manifestation of the divine order. For centuries, astrology has been considered a spiritual science and sacred art.

The Sun, Pluto, North Node, and Soul Purpose

"The fault is not in our stars but in ourselves." -- Shakespeare.

When looking at an individual’s birth chart and wondering about the soul’s intention, the leading indicators are the north node of the Moon, Pluto, and the Sun. Most people know their Sun’s zodiac sign but not necessarily its house position or aspects (angles to other planets or positions). The Sun represents our creative potential, will, vitality, and essential Higher Self. Here, we find clues on how we relate to the Divine as co-creators.

Pluto’s sign, house, and aspects represent the will of the soul. It also indicates our deepest unconscious fears that our soul has chosen to face and transform. Because we have free will, we can manifest any planetary energy in an un-evolved or evolved way. Spiritual astrology provides insight into the path of growth. We are not fated to manifest the lower vibrational energies of any astrological configuration in our birth chart.

The moon’s nodes represent issues that are in our conscious awareness. For example, we often know our talents and what comes easily. While our soul nudges us to develop in new creative ways, we may resist out of fear of change or the unknown. When we progress, there is a conscious sense of achievement and fulfillment.

The South Node, Uranus, and Liberation from our Traumatic Past

Colorful planets over chart
The outer planets symbolize energies of transformation.

There are many ways that astrology assists in our healing process. For example, the moon’s south node clarifies the issues of the past that need transformation and healing. The Moon’s north node provides direction and clarity of life’s purpose. Also, as mentioned, Pluto (and related factors) represent our unconscious fears. However, Uranus (and house and aspects of Uranus, the 11th house, and Aquarius) help reveal our soul’s trauma history and guidance related to its resolution.

When current stressors trigger old wounds, people often seek support. These issues are indicated by current transits and progressions to the birth chart. If you are interested, I am here to assist you in identifying, processing, and resolving any trauma issues you are ready to address.

Identifying the themes of potential traumas, as indicated in the charts, is often validating and transformative. If emotions surface during or after a session, follow-up sessions may be beneficial. For more information, please get in touch with me below. Thanks.
